ABSTRACT

Background: The batting performance is assessed by considering the batting average and strike rate of a batsman. With the induction of T-20 cricket matches, the strike rate of a batsman has gained much attention from coaches and team management. To increase the strike rate a batsman required to hit powerful shots for boundaries, which assist in making maximum scores at the minimum ball. Therefore, this investigation was planned to determine the effect of body size on the batting performance of cricket batsman. Methods: the literature for this study was selected for cricket coaching manual, cricket books, cricket batting videos, a biography of cricket batsmen, research articles. The academic documents were downloaded and shortlisted from Google Scholar, Research Gate, EBSCO, and ProQuest from 1990 to 2019. Results: The synthesized literature review concludes, stature, longer legs, longer arms, and lean body mass of a batsman show positive effects on the execution of powerful shots in cricket. Furthermore, the maximum strength of muscles assists a batsman to boost up the initial velocity of bat swing to accomplish the ball speed for a successful and powerful shot. Conclusions: Although stature and longer limbs of batsmen are associated with batting performance. On the other hand, the specific training would also enhance the capacity of cricket batsman for powerful shots in cricket. A future study was proposed to investigate the effect of training on the batting performance.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study was designed in two poles, 1st to examine the kinematic parameters of the handball jump shot and 2nd to compare the anthropometric, and physical fitness of novice and skilled female handball players of the university level. Methods: This study design was cross-sectional, and a purposive sampling method was adopted for selecting the participants. The sample consisted of (n = 20) novice, and (n = 20) university female handball players. The selected variables were standing broad jump, vertical jump, flexibility, 30-m dash, agility, stride length, stature, body mass, arm length, upper arm girth, leg length, chest girth, waist girth, hip girth, thigh girth, calf girth, hand length, handbreadth and shoulder breadth, pelvic breadth, transverse breadth, elbow and knee breadth, handgrip and arm span, left and right knee angle, left and right elbow angle. An Independent t-test was applied to examine differences between skilled and novice players in kinematics and anthropometric variables. Results: Results showed the skilled female players were significantly higher than the novice players in the following as right elbow angle at the start of movement (<. 03), left elbow angle at the start of movement (<. 00), right knee angle at the start of movements (< .03), stride length at release (< .01), 30-meter dash (< .04), handgrip strength(< .02), agility (< .03), forearm girth (< .03), thigh girth (< . 03) and arm span (< .04). Conclusion: It was concluded the higher angle of elbows, right knee along with more prolonged stride increase the movement capacity of skilled female handball player while attempting the jump shots than novice female players. On the other hand, the anthropometric and fitness measures as arm span, thigh girth, running speed, handgrip strength, and agility increase the performance of skilled players than the novice. The female handball coaches may enhance the performance of novice players by focusing on the specific training of extension and flexion of elbows and stride movement as well as enhancing the physical fitness of female handball players. Future studies would focus on the training of handball players to increase the jump shot performance of players.

ABSTRACT

Streptokinase [SK] is a fibrinolytic protein used for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. In the present study, enhanced production of SK was achieved by determining the optimum fermentation conditions for the maximum growth of Streptococcus agalactiae EBL-31 using response surface methodology [RSM]. Four process variables [pH, temperature, incubation time and inoculum size] with five levels were evaluated in 30 experimental runs. Central composite rotatable design [CCRD] was employed to predict the effect of independent variables on SK activity. The statistical evaluation by ANOVA showed that the model was fit as the effect of single factors, quadratic effects and most of the interactions among variables. The value ofR2 [0.9988] indicated the satisfactory interaction between the experimental and predicted responses. Furthermore, the model F value [902.67] and coefficient of variation [1.92] clearly showed that the model is significant [p =>0.0001]. The functional activity of SK was determined by spectrophotometric analysis and maximum SK production was obtained at pH-7.0, temperature- 37.5 degree C, an incubation time of 36 hours and 2.5 mL inoculum size. Hence it was concluded that the optimization of culture conditions through RSM increases the production of SK by 2.01-fold. Production of SK by fermentation is an economical choice to be used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases

ABSTRACT

Fragaria × ananassa leaves extracts prepared in different solvents were subject for antioxidative, cytotoxicity, protein kinase inhibition and antibacterial activities. The extracts showed varying activities depending upon solvent used for extraction. Combined effect of methanol and ethyl acetate showed maximum antioxidant and reducing power potential [207.65+/-6 micro g AAE/mg and 88.58+/-20 micro g AAE/mg, respectively]. Maximum DPPH [2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl] free radical scavenging activity was calculated by when methanol: chloroform and acetate fractions were used [87.68% and 86.88% inhibition, respectively]. Total phenolics varied from 186 to 1.91 micro g AAE/mg while total flavonoids also significantly varied among the extracts. The extracts also showed significant activities against brine shrimp larvae and bacterial strains tested. The study concludes that Fragaria × ananassa leaves can be a good source for isolation of active phytochemicals to be used in different industries

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To analyze prevalence of anxiety and depression among doctors serving in a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, with a study of impact of relevant demographic features


Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at Combined Military Hospital, Lahore, from February 2014 to Jan 2015. Participants were doctors serving in subject hospital for at least six months duration. Standardized Hospital Anxiety Depression Score [HADS] inventory was selected as inventory. Formal approval from hospital ethical committee and written informed consent from participants were obtained. Demographic characteristics of participants were recorded as independent variables; anxiety and depression scores being outcome variables. Data analysis was done via descriptive statistics [SPSS-20], qualitative data expressed as frequencies, percentages; quantitative as mean +/- standard deviation[SD]. Cross tabulation was done via chi-square, p-value < 0.05 considered as significant


Results: Out of 203 volunteers, 97[47.78%] responded. Score of anxiety was 7.04 +/- 4.470, maximum being 19, scores of depression was 4.94 +/- 3.605, maximum score being 15. Mild to moderate anxiety and depression were revealed in 33[34%] and 24[24.8%] respectively, while 7[7.2%] and 1[1.0%] had severe anxiety and depression respectively. There was strong positive relation between anxiety and depression[p<0.001]. There was significant impact of service years on depression[p-0.011] and gender on anxiety[p-0.002],9[17.31%] males and 24[53.33%] females had mild to moderate anxiety while 4[7.69%] males and 3[6.66%] females revealed severe anxiety and other variables did not reveal significant impact on HADS scores


Conclusion: Doctors showed high grades of anxiety and depression. They must be promptly screened and managed at all medical institutions

ABSTRACT

Bergenia ciliata [locally known as Zakhm-e-hayat; wound healer] is commonly employed for wound healing, curing diarrhea and vomiting, fever, cough and pulmonary affections. Local community uses this plant as tea decoction with table salt. B. ciliata crude extract and its fractions were subjected to antibacterial, antioxidant effects as well as determination of total flavonoids and phenolics, DNA damage and anticancerous activities following standard protocols. Increased percentage inhibition of free radical in DPPH assay as well as elevated phenolic and flavonoid contents revealed antioxidant potential of this potent herb. Ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts showed IC50 of 0.7 and 0.3 mg/ml respectively, against H157 cell line. Antibacterial analysis showed MIC 0.4-10mg/ml for crude extract and fractions. The results obtained conclude that extracts of B. ciliata contain remedial latent and can be used as possible source for drug development by pharmaceutical industries

Objective: To analyze desire for sons/daughters among ladies of Peshawar, Pakistan, with a view to rule out son preference and to study impact of various demographic characteristics on the subject


Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at Combined Military Hospital, Peshawar, from August 2015 - January 2016; sampling technique was random/probability/non-purposive. Self-designed questionnaire was utilized; carrying questions pertinent to desire for sons/daughters during marital life, and demographic details. Data analyzed via descriptive analysis [SPSS-21], expressed as frequencies/ percentages and mean +/- standard deviation [minimum/maximum]


Sons and daughters desired [dependent variables] were cross-tabulated with independent variables


Results: Response rate was 63.25% [n-506]


Data revealed following: Sons desired 3.05 +/- 2.061[1/12]; Daughters desired 1.15 +/- 0.767[0/4]; 6.1%[n-31] and 0.6%[n-3] desired infinite number of sons and daughters respectively, 18.2%[n-92] did not desire to have even one daughter, while 2.2%[n-11] considered it immaterial to have daughters or sons


There was a significant relation between sons desired and client's education [p<0.001], husband's education [p<0.001] and socioeconomic class [p<0.001]. There was no significant impact of religion [p-0.142] on desire for sons. Impact of independent variables on daughters desired was similar but less pronounced


Conclusion: There was candid son preference among the respondents. Gender discrimination can be attenuated by adequately addressing son preference at all tiers

ABSTRACT

Pistacia integerrima with a common name crab's claw is an ethnobotanically important tree native to Asia. Traditionally plant parts particularly its galls have been utilized for treatment of cough, asthma, dysentery, liver disorders and for snake bite. Plant mainly contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and sterols in different parts including leaf, stem, bark, galls and fruit. A number of terpenoids, sterols and phenolic compounds have been isolated from Pistacia integerrima extracts. Plant has many biological activities including anti-microbial, antioxidant, analgesic, cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity due to its chemical constituents. This review covers its traditional ethnomedicinal uses along with progresses in biological and phytochemical evaluation of this medicinally important plant species and aims to serve as foundation for further exploration and utilization.

ABSTRACT

To determine the frequency of early onset neonatal sepsis in newborn with various duration of preterm premature rupture of membranes [PPROM]. Cross sectional study. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Combined Military Hospital, Lahore from November 2009 to November 2010. Neonates of singleton pregnancies complicanted by pretern premature rupture of the membranes [PPROM] with delivery between 30 and 36 weeks gestation were included in the study. The overall frequency of neonatal sepsis was calculated on clinical and serological basis. Comparison of the frequency of sepsis among groups with varying duration of rupture of membranes was done. Out of 164 babies, 84 [51.2%] were female and 80 [48.8%] were male. Mean maternal age was 23 year [range: 18-36 years] .Mean gestational age was 33 weeks [range: 30-36 weeks]. Sepsis was suspected in 41 [25%] babies on clinical grounds. C-reactive protein was raised in 36 [22%] neonates. There was statistically insignificant difference between clinical versus serological diagnosis [p=0.515]. Frequency of neonatal sepsis was significantly higher in mothers with longer duration of rupture of membrane [p< 0.001]. Frequency of neonatal sepsis was observed to be 22%. PPROM is an important risk factor for early onset neonatal sepsis

ABSTRACT

To analyze the rate, the frequency of different indications and the most common indication of cesarean sections in Military Hospital Rawalpindi. Cross sectional study. Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Military Hospital Rawalpindi from September 2011 to February 2012. A total of 3555 pregnant females delivered during study period were enrolled in the study. Health volunteers and the cases of uterine rupture, pregnancy with fetal anomaly, or termination of pregnancy were excluded from the study. All patients were admitted in labor room. Detailed obstetric and gynecological history was taken. Detailed general physical examination and obstetric examination was done. Baseline investigations were checked. Fetal anomalies were ruled out by anomaly scan. Strict fetomaternal monitoring was done during labor. Cervical foley catheter and prostaglandin E2 [Prostin] tablets were used for induction according to Bishop score. Clinical record of all patients, including mode of delivery and indication, was analyzed in terms of percentage and frequency and documented in a special performa after written informed consent. Filled performas were attached with patient's case notes. Patients enrolled in the study over six months were 3555, out of which 1620 [45.5%] were delivered by cesarean section, 1901 [53.4%] were spontaneous vaginal deliveries and 34 [0.9%] were delivered by vaginal birth after cesarean [VBAC]. The rate of cesarean section in our study was 45.5% and the most common factor was repeat cesarean section [44.4%], followed by failed trial of labor [27.1%] and fetal distress seen in 165 [10.1%] cases. The rate of cesarean section in our study was 45.5% and the most common factor was repeat cesarean section 44.4%

ABSTRACT

The study provides epidemiological analysis of autopsy record on asphyxial deaths and different methods used to carry it out. It was a retrospective [descriptive] study done at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College Peshawar. Analysis of autopsy record was done and cases of asphyxial deaths and the cause of asphyxia was noted. The data covers a period from January 2009 to June 2012. A total of 3,265 [males n=2839, Females n= 426] cases were presented for autopsy to Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Department of Khyber medical college Peshawar and 130 deaths were due to asphyxia compared with 2370 deaths due to firearm. Homicide was the most common manner of death. 89 cases were males and 41 were females. Approximate ages of the autopsies conducted were 0-19 years n= [18.2%], 20-40 years n= [64.5%], 41-60 years n= [13%] and 61 or above n=4 [3.0%]. Strangulation was found to be the most common method used. Asphyxial deaths are not as common as firearm deaths in Peshawar. Homicide is the most common method of death. The findings may be helpful for the security agencies in investigation of asphyxial deaths

ABSTRACT

Fetal growth retardation is most commonly caused by placental letdown to meet the increasing demand for oxygen and nutrients of the developing fetus. Intrauterine growth restriction [IUGR] is common happening in Pakistani setup especially in rural areas. Current literature suggests that placental causes are more common than the maternal causes in intrauterine growth restriction. Macroscopic and microscopic examination of placenta can help us to identify the patho-physiology of placental involvement. This is reasonable especially in those cases of intrauterine growth retardation which are not perplexed by maternal causes. To identify macroscopic and microscopic features of placenta in pregnancy complicated with IUGR. Descriptive study. This study was conducted at Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan in collaboration with Department of Pathology Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur and Anatomy Department, Nishtar Medical College, Multan. Study duration was two years from July, 2010 to June, 2012. One hundred and fifty placentae, 85 from cases of intrauterine growth retardation and 65 from normal [control] were enrolled for the study. Fetal and placental weights and placental diameter and thickness were measured. Tissue for histological examination was obtained from: i] Umbilical cord ii] membranes and iii] three placental zones. The tissues were processed and stained with Haematoxlyin, Eosin and Mallory's Trichrome. The prepared tissues were studied microscopically for villous and intervillous lesions utilizing various criteria. Macroscopically there was significant decrease in placental weight, fetal weight, and placental diameter and thickness. Microscopic findings were increased fibrinoid necrosis [46.7%], increased perivillous fibrinoid deposition [16.7%], increased syncytial knots [60%] and increased placental infarction [1.8%]. These findings document comparatively higher frequency of fibrinoid necrosis and perivillous fibrinoid deposition. This draws ours attention to the predominant role of placental causes in cases of idiopathic intrauterine growth retardation

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of two ethnobotanically important plant species Carissa opaca and Toona ciliata against cancer cells. Antiproliferative activity of the plant extracts and their fractions was tested against MCF-7 breast cancer cell line using MTT assay. A concentration dependent inhibition was observed for both crude extracts. C. opaca crude extract showed 78.5% inhibition while T. ciliata showed 57% activity against cancer cells at 500 micro g/ml. Fractions were tested at 200 micro g/ml concentration and were more active than crude extracts. Chloroform fraction of C. opaca showed maximum inhibition 99% followed by ethyl acetate and methanol fraction of C. opaca exhibiting 96% and 94% inhibition, respectively. Ethyl acetate fraction of T. ciliata showed 78% inhibition of cancer cells at the same concentration. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the chemical composition of C. opaca extract containing alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins while T. ciliata had tannins and coumarins. Present investigation suggests that tested plant species possess potent anticancer compounds specially chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions of C. opaca and ethyl acetate fraction of T. ciliata can be an important source of anticancer drugs

Crude methanolic extracts of selected legumes namely, black gram [Vigna mungo L.], green gram [Vigna radiata [L.] R. Wilczek], soybean [Glycine max [L.] Merr.] and lentil [Lens culinaris Medik.] were investigated for anti-inflammatory effects, using COX-2 producing PGE[2] inhibitory assay. Percentage inhibition observed was 73.93, 79.84, 92.17 and 74.47 for black gram, green gram, soybean and lentil respectively at 20microg/ml extract concentration. The l00 micro g/ml concentration showed increase in the percent inhibition except for soybean. This is the first report on COX-2 inhibitory potential of food legumes

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to find MRI findings in patients with Prolactin levels above1000mIU/L. Methodology: This Retrospective study was conducted in Radiology Department, Rehman Medical Institute,Peshawar, from December 2009 to October 2012. A total of 86 patients, aged 16-48 years with high Prolactinlevels, were screened with MRI for pituitary gland abnormalities. Only new undiagnosed patientswere considered for the study. Children and patients with known causes for hyperprolactinaemia wereexcluded.The most common abnormality on MRI was microadenoma [n=34, 39.5%] followed by macroadenoma[n=14, 16.3%]. 12[7%] cases of complete/partial empty sella syndrome were seen. Macroadenomawas more common in males [n=6 out of 14, 42.3%] while microadenoma was more common in females[n=32 out of 72, 44.4%]. Majority of Patients had an abnormal MRI finding, showing that MRI screening should berecommended for Prolactin levels above 1000mIU/L. Microadenoma was the most common abnormality,having higher incidence in female patients

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to describe the unnatural deaths and their causes in Peshawar and its suburbs. This descriptive study was conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. Autopsy data from January 2009 to April 2012 was analyzed and only those cases were selected for the study where the cause of death was unnatural i.e., homicide, suicide, accidental or undetermined. Of a total of 3,265 autopsies due to unnatural causes during 40 months period, 2,839 [87%] were males and 426 [13%] were females. There were 2,856 cases of homicide - 2,475 [87%] were males and 381[13%] were females, 317 were accidental deaths - 281 [89%] males and 36 females [11%], 66 were suicide cases - 61 [92%] males and 5 females [8%] and 26 were undetermined deaths - 22 males [85%] and 4 [15%] females. Most victims were aged 20-40 years. Most common cause of death was firearm - 2370 cases, blunt trauma 279 cases and bomb blast/explosives 167 cases. The rate of unnatural deaths in Peshawar is very high. Autopsies done during the study period were a lot more than previous years. Homicide is the most common manner of death with firearms being the most common weapon used. Strict laws should be implemented to limit illegal weapons. Surveillance must be increased in all parts of the city to reduce the loss of precious human lives

ABSTRACT

This study was done to determine the sensitivity and resistance pattern to the most common antibiotics in use. The data for this retrospective study was obtained and analysed from October 2010 to October 2011 in Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. Purposive sampling and univariate analysis was done. 2058 samples were cultured for sensitivity using Kirby Bauer's Diffusion technique and in a period of one year, growth of Staphylococcus aureus was obtained in 723 samples. These 723 growths were obtained from clinical isolates of pus [699], blood [16] and urine [8]. Fourteen drugs from five different classes of antibiotics were tested for sensitivity against Staphylococcus aureus. Most of the growth was obtained from pus [96.7%]. Resistance was high to all groups of antibiotics except glycopeptides. There was no case of Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus [VRSA]. Out of 723 samples, 228 [31.5%] were Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]. The resistance to a representative antibiotic of each group is as follows: Ciprofloxacin [Fluor quinolone] 51.7%, Cephradine [Cephalosporin] 46.2%, Amoxicillin+Clavulanic Acid [Penicillin group] 45.6%,Imipenem+Cilastatin Sodium [Carbapenem] 42.0% and Teicoplanin [Glycopeptide] 19.8%.Resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to Teicoplanin and most of the antibiotics is high and strict guidelines are required to control unnecessary prescriptions and over the counter sale of antibiotics

It has been seen that just delivering the lectures of anatomy followed by dissection may fail to produce a long lasting understanding of the subject. The students are also unable to appreciate the importance of clinical anatomy integrated within various medical disciplines. A medical college or university may look at restructuring the medical curriculum with an anatomy resource centre which can have a pivotal influence on self-directed learning. It is also necessary to use plastic models to overcome the complexity of the structures such as perineum and joints.
